HACKS is poignant and lovely fun.

Watching HACKS on HBO Max will be a highlight of the summer. Jean Smart is riveting and brilliant as Deboarh Vance, a stand-up who has clawed her way to decades-long success first on TV, then in the clubs. It is an award-winning caliber performance.

Hannah Einbinder is equally spellbinding as Ava, a young non-binary writer who had a flash of early success that went up in flames due to an awful tweet. As the series starts, Deborah is told she will lose her prime-time Vegas slots as her shows are too stale. And Ava, who shares her agent, is given no choice but to work with Deborah to write new material. It is comedy heaven.

The two women have great chemistry, first as foreigners, then enemies, and finally partners. Their journey is full of surprises that will leave you binge watching and enjoying each episode.

Creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky deserve a standing ovation as much as Deborah does.
